MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 9, 2008 25 STEPPING OUT www.innerwestweekly.com.au Essence of split personality FIONA BRADY WHAT: Sybil-essence art exhibition by Sophie Mill WHERE: The Waterfront Function Centre, 3 The Crescent, Homebush Bay WHEN: 10am to 5pm Friday to Sunday until October 17 DETAILS:9739 9571 Artist Sophie Mill is exhibiting her eclectic range of works at The Waterfront at Homebush Bay. IT was Sophie Mill's husband who came up with the quirky title of her latest exhibition -- Sybil- essence. ''My husband was looking at several of my canvases that happened to be sitting near one another, all very different, and he looked at me, then again at the paintings, and with a slightly worried expression he finally said 'I've married Sybil' -- a reference to the 1976 Sally Field TV film about a woman called Sybil with 16 different personalities. The artist agrees that her art, like her life, is full of contrasts. After falling in love with her farmer husband, the North Shore girl moved to a 1000ha property about an hour from Moree and 20 minutes drive from the nearest neighbour. She thought it would be a huge adventure, but the solitude and loneliness proved too much for her and after seven years she had slid into a deep depression. The turnaround came when the family decided to leave the land and move to Newcastle. This collection of works charts the difficult journey she made during those years. ''Art is emotion,'' Mill said. ''I paint what I feel, you have to abandon yourself to the call of your intuition. ''When I paint I discover the real me under the polished surface of my beliefs by letting go of the things you know -- politeness, neatness, containment.''
