MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 16, 2008 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Taking 'great strides' is part of life for Amelia ZILKA GROGAN Cystic fibrosis sufferer Amelia Ford will take part in the Great Strides Walkathon for Cystic Fibrosis research on Sunday. Picture: Phil Blatch ~PP203121 MOST people cannot imagine taking 30 to 40 tablets every day and having daily physiotherapy sessions. But for eight-year-old Amelia Ford, these things are just facts of life. Amelia was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at birth, a life- threatening genetic condition that affects the lungs and digestion. Amelia's mother, Suzanne, said her daughter had often struggled to come to terms with her illness. ''She has spent a lot of time in hospital, particularly in the first years of her life,'' she said. ''It is not easy at all. She has definitely struggled with the treatment and feeling unwell all the time.'' The Ford family, who live in Drummoyne, will take part in the Great Strides Walkathon for Cystic Fibrosis this Sunday. Last year, more than 400 people took part in the walkathon. Ms Ford said the event was an opportunity for CF sufferers to socialise and to raise community awareness. ''Especially for someone of Amelia's age, it's really nice to see people with CF all socialising together,'' she said. ''For the children with CF it's important for them to see other children. It's just very encouraging and increases visibility.'' Great Strides is a national event that raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The walkathon will be held at Rodd Park in Drummoyne on Sunday. Several products originating from China have been removed from store shelves nationwide after they were found to contain traces of the chemical melamine. A spokeswoman from the NSW Food Authority said they were working with all other states and territories, as well as Food Stan- dards Australia and New Zealand to co-ordinate a national response. ''The Food Authority is under- taking targeted surveillance of food products that are made in China and contain some dairy component,'' the spokeswoman said. ''This would include some sur- veillance in the Inner West of Sydney.'' The Food Authority said that any products found to be contami- nated would be removed from sale to avoid harming the public. Melamine is used in the plastics industry and should not be pres- ent in food. It was allegedly used in China to make milk products appear higher in protein than they actually were. Four Chinese milk-based prod- ucts have been removed from stores -- White Rabbit cream candy, Lotte Koala biscuits, Kirin milk tea and Cadbury Eclairs. $10 OFF 230 Liverpool Road ASHFIELD NSW 2131 Ph: 9798 5185 OPEN m †Always read the label.
