NSW 2150 43 46 33 The devil in Vic Rd detail Should Victoria Rd be upgraded? Voting has been extended until Friday in our online poll at www.innerwestweekly.com.au MARIE SANSOM IT'S 1000 pages long but Inner West commuters reading a new report on the Victoria Rd up- grade will be struck by a much smaller number: four minutes 22 seconds. That's how long the $156 million project will slice from the average morning peak citybound bus journey, accord- ing to traffic modelling done by Mason Wilson Twiney for the RTA. The report, which has just gone on public exhibition until November 25, said bus speeds would rise by an average of 5.8km/h between Westbourne St, Drummoyne, and The Cres- cent, Rozelle, in the morning peak once construction was fin- ished. Motorist will save one minute 11 seconds although the report warns ''this is unlikely to be achieved in reality as traffic is likely to be diverted from further afield to take advantage of these travel time savings''. For westbound bus travellers the outlook's worse: average travel times in the morning will actually increase by 31 seconds and car drivers will lose 67 seconds. Alex Elliott, from the Victoria Rd Community Committee, said the figures were buried in Ap- pendix F on page 306. ''This is deception by the RTA, they're trying to pull the wool over our eyes,'' Mr Elliott said. ''They want to spend $156 million and cause massive disruption to the local com- munity to take off four minutes at best. It doesn't fill me with great confidence.'' But Roads Minister Michael Daley told one media outlet the figure was an average over a three-hour period and times would be shorter in parts of the morning peak. The document also lays bare the potential impact of the proj- ect's construction and oper- ation, including water and air pollution, traffic delays, noise and vibration. The RTA will hold infor- mation sessions on Saturdays, November 1 and 8, at Birkenhead Point shopping centre.
