MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 23, 2008 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Unique Yaralla unveiled FIONA BRADY Yaralla is holding an open day this Sunday. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP206061 Bob Jones from the Concord Heritage Society points out some areas of interest at Yaralla. BRING a picnic and explore the unique house and grounds of Yaralla this Sunday at an open day organised by the Concord Heri- tage Society. It is the first time the mansion (known as Dame Eadith Walker Hospital) has been open to the public since the Sydney South West Area Health Service moved its dialysis unit out of there in June. The health service said it was still working with heritage archi- tects to decide how it will use the building in the future. Concord Heritage Society will be running 45-minute tours of the house from 10am and bookings are essential. Tours of the grounds including the squash court, dairy, stables and gardens will also be running throughout the day, but there is no need to pre-book. Concord Heritage Society mem- ber Bob Jones said he was fre- quently amazed by people who have lived all their lives in the Inner West but didn't know about Yaralla. ''How could you ever imagine 100 acres in the middle of Sydney on the water, it's irreplaceable,'' he said. A large selection of old photo- graphs of the estate will be on display in the old stables complex. Devonshire teas will be for sale in the 1870s dairy, which was refurbished last year by a team of volunteers. House tours cost $15 for adults, $10 concessions and children are admitted free. One of the most successful Aust- ralian Idols, Guy Sebastian , who was a guest celebrity on Sunday night's Motown show, had a few loving words to say to our Ashfield local despite thinking she chose the ''wrong song''. Priddis sang Diana Ross's classic, Reflections, and after her performance Sebastian said he absolutely loved what she did. ''I love you, you are so full of energy and so full of life and the minute you walked into that workshop, you were a bundle of energy,'' Sebastian said. ''I think we did everything we could with that song and we tried as much as we could but I still think it wasn't the best song that showcased what you do, because you're brilliant.'' Despite getting positive feedback nearly each week, Priddis saw herself in a difficult and tearful position when the judges continued to slam her song choice. Ian (Dicko) Dickson got straight to the point with Priddis's per- formance and said she did not do justice to the song.
