MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 23, 2008 11 A real 'cool' school SHIREEN KHALIL Matthew Arthur from My Guitar School. YOU know you're ''cool'' when you are named the top 50 coolest companies in Australia. Business owners and mar- ried couple Matthew and Jodi Arthur of My Guitar School in Five Dock ''were completely blown away'' when they were selected from 700 nominees, in Ant- hill Magazine's top 50 coolest company awards. The business magazine launched the Cool Company Awards in 2006 which pub- licly acknowledge and cel- ebrates Australian organis- ations that are doing things differently. The 2008 Awards were judged across eight categories for the overall PricewaterhouseCoopers' Coolest Company Award. My Guitar School nomi- nated themselves in the X-Factor and Micro Busi- ness categories for the first time, and despite not taking home these awards, they managed to walk away proudly as a ''cool'' com- pany. ''Honestly we were com- pletely blown away -- we work really hard to make our school the best it can be and have been finalists in local business awards for the past three years,'' Ms Arthur said. ''We pride ourselves on who we are and what we do, however to be able to suc- cessfully compete with businesses on a national level and be named in the Top 50, beating over 650 other businesses of all shapes and sizes is truly an amazing achievement.'' My Guitar School starting teaching in the Ella Centre in Haberfield and quickly expanded to studios in Five Dock and Drummoyne, teaching more than 180 students a week. When asked what made the school so cool, Ms Arthur said: ''What's more cool than guitar?''. ''Seriously though we've been doing what we do for 10 years now and have worked hard to make a positive impact on the community. ''We like to think that our students don't just learn to play the guitar, they learn to socialise with their peers, have fun and gain more confidence which they take with them into their every- day lives.''
