''Iwas50whenIgotitand I was first in the family to get cancer and they were more shocked than I was,'' she said. ''Unless you've been through something like this, you don't realise what people go through,'' she said. ''When I went through it, I didn't realise how bad it was and if it wasn't for my family and friends' support, I don't think I'd cope with it.''Ms Merlino has been tak- ing part in the Relay For Life event for four years, to help raise money for cancer research. Altogether she and her team from St Ambrose Church raised $29,600 for the Cancer Council. ''We have raised money through garage sales, saus- age sizzles, coffee days and many other events,'' Ms Merlino said. Relay For Life is an over- night community fundrais- ing event organised by a local committee of volun- teers and supported by The Cancer Council NSW. The November 1 event will be held at Sid Richards Oval, Nullawarra Ave, Con- cord West. Kate Neeson, Relay for Life co-ordinator for the Cancer Council's Central and Southern Sydney re- gional office, said: ''At the opening ceremony, sur- vivors and carers are in- vited to walk the first lap of the relay so others can honour their fight. Their supporters line the track and join in after the first lap.'' Ms Merlino said it was a great event. ''We set up tents, light a candle for people who lost their lives, there's music, you never get bored -- there's something for every- one to enjoy and the kids love it. Come along,'' she said.
