14 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 23, 2008 MB NEWS Help for seniors www.innerwestweekly.com.au TRANSLATION: This story is translated in Chinese and Italian at www.innerwestweekly.com.au TRADUZIONE: Questo articolo è tradotto in italiano al sito: www.innerwestweekly.com.au CHINESE and Italian-speaking seniors can now get help to minimise the risks of using medicines. The National Prescribing Service Limited and Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia are working to ad- dress preventable medicine-related harm for seniors from specific language groups, by running a series of workshops this month. There can be risks involved in using all medicine, including prescription, over-the- counter and traditional. These risks are increased for senior Australians, particu- larly those with low English language proficiency and literacy levels. The authorities are focusing on Manda- rin, Cantonese and Italian-speaking seniors through a tailored Get to know your Medicines national awareness campaign. Each year about 400,000 Australians ex- perience side effects, reactions and sensitivities related to using medicines. The physical consequences range from feeling unwell to permanent disability or death and result in more than 140,000 people admitted to hospital each year. Italians can contact Co.AS.IT in Leichhardt on 9564 0744. Chinese speakers can contact Ashfield- based Chinese Migrant Welfare Association of NSW on 9716 0612 or Campsie-based Chinese Australian Services Society Co-Op on 9789 4587.
