ADVERTISEMENT Researchers have concluded just that -- people who leave their hearing loss untreated are subject to permanent, untreatable hearing loss due to a phenomenon known as auditory deprivation. Two studies conducted by researchers from the City University of New York (Silman et al, 1984 and 2006) proved that reduced stimulation of the auditory portion of the brain accelerated decline in speech recognition in the unaided ear. In laymen's terms -- these studies showed that when people with hearing loss do not wear hearing aids, they will lose their ability to follow conversations at a much faster rate. Additionally, they concluded that there is significant benefit in wearing two hearing aids rather than one. Research has also revealed that hearing loss has been linked to lower income -- on average, up to $11,000 a year less than their peers who use hearing aids. Ironically, many people worry that wearing hearing aids will lead to them to being perceived as old. However, the symptoms of hearing loss are more likely to promote the perceptions by others that someone is 'old'. This reluctance has motivated hearing aid manufacturers to develop devices to attract age- phobic, style-conscious people. For example, Sonic Innovations has just released the virtually invisible ion400 and Velocity miniBTE hearing aids. "Whenever I've referred to my hearing aids, people say to me, 'Oh, are you actually wearing hearing aids?" says Owen Jacobsen. Discussing the latest hearing aid technology, local Audiologist Jackie Randall from HEARINGLife in Burwood said: "The best hearing aids, such as the ion400 and Velocity, are fully-automatic. You can be reading at home, then head off to a busy shopping centre, watch a movie, and answer the phone without ever having to think about, or adjust, your hearing aids." Darryl Cockburn, an experienced user of hearing aids, is amazed by the changes this new technology has made in his life: "The other day I was at a grandkid's party and I could hear everything she was saying -- both good and bad", he remarks with a chuckle. "She told me -- Pop, you have new ears ... and I guess I really do..." HEARINGLife is offering FREE hearing tests and home trials of the latest digital hearing aids.
