52 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 23, 2008 MB Inner-West Weekly Sport Shauna rides her big wave JUNIOR SPORTS STAR FIONA BRADY Concord West lifesaver Shauna Murray is this week's Junior Sports Star nominee. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP205478 NIPPER extraordinaire Shauna Murray can't wait until it's her turn to patrol the beach. Although she's only 10, the Con- cord West youngster has been making some big waves in surf lifesaving circles. Earlier this year she and three team-mates at Elouera Surf Club won a bronze medal in the under- 10 years girls surf team in the NSW Junior Lifesaving Cham- pionships. At the same event she was a finalist in the individual surf swim and she placed eighth over- all in the board relay. The Strathfield North Public School pupil loves the thrill of ocean swimming. ''I've gotten scared once or twice because of the big surf but nor- mally it is OK,'' said the waterbaby who also won silver medals in both the board relay and surf team event in the Sydney Branch Junior Surf Lifesaving Championships in South Maroubra in February. ''I like being a nipper because I get to go the beach every Sunday and spend the day with my friends.'' In fact, Shauna spends nearly as much time in the water as on land. As a member of Ryde-Carlile Swimming Club she trains three to four times a week and, as if that wasn't enough, she's got a pool in her backyard. It's certainly paying off because Shauna qualified for the State PSSA Swimming carni- val in April and the Metropolitan Short Course Swimming Cham- pionships in June. She's now in training for the Metropolitan Long Course Cham- pionships in December where she'll compete in both the freestyle and the backstroke and the State Age Championships in January where she's qualified for the back- stroke. In the winter months, Shauna spends a bit more time on land as a member of the Commodores, a Greenlees Netball Club team who are the Division 1 Premiers 10 years. But although she loves netball, Shauna definitely sees her future in aquatics. ''I want to go to the Olympics for swimming but if that doesn't hap- pen, I'll be a lifesaver,'' she said. ''A lifesaver or a swimming teacher.''
