MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 30, 2008 11 NEWS A 'journey' in print FIONA BRADY Julian Holland and Ann O'Connell, from Ashfield & District Historical Society, have released a new book. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP208628 THE lives of some of Ashfield's most exotic resi- dents are commemorated in a new book published by the local historical society. Journeys is the 17th journal produced by the Ashfield & District Histori- cal Society and looks at migrants to Ashfield and their connection to world events. One chapter is devoted to Elvard Martin Jorgen Andersen, a Danish man who emigrated to Australia and lived in Summer Hill. He later became an Anzac and died at Gallipoli. Although he was not famous, Andersen is com- memorated in Denmark, in the Lone Pine Memorial for the Missing in Turkey and in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Society secretary Ann O'Connell said there were ''endless interesting things in Ashfield's history that need researching and writ- ing up''. ''We invite all budding researchers and writers to join us and contribute their stories as they all add to the wealth of our history and heritage,'' she said. The society's research rooms at Thirning Villa, Pratten Park, are open twice a month. Journeys costs $25. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for details. Then we can help!
