14 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 30, 2008 MB NEWS Grain on the brain Students at Australian International Academy at Strathfield with their design entries. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP208575 TWO local primary schools will compete against each other in a design compe- tition to promote healthy eating. Both the Australian Inter- national Academy in Strathfield and Summer Hill Public School have sub- mitted entries to the Go Grains Kids Design Chal- lenge. Children in Years 5 and 6 were asked to develop an advertising campaign to en- courage their fellow students to eat more grain- based foods, such as bread, cereal, rice and pasta. Students from the Aust- ralian International Acad- emy designed ads for a var- iety of media, including a radio advertisement, an infomercial and a T-shirt. They will present the win- ning design, a poster based on the Simpson's character Mr Burns, at the Go Grains celebration event this week. Year 5 teacher Admira Aldabbas found it difficult to choose the winning entry but she said that all the students benefited from get- ting involved. ''The competition is very educational because it is related to the syllabus and you can integrate it with key learning areas.'' Ms Aldabbas said. Both Year 6 Opportunity Classes from Summer Hill Public School are submit- ting entries. Teacher Kristen Murray, whose class has designed Tazo cards to be found in the packages of grain products, said students enjoyed ad- dressing a practical issue. ''It is real learning that is connected to the real world,'' Ms Murray said. ''It is multidisciplinary because students are doing a science project that in- volves art, English and maths.''
