24 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, October 30, 2008 MB NURTURE www.innerwestweekly.com.au More new mums go home early SHIREEN KHALIL A RECORD number of new mums in the Inner West are taking advantage of an innovative mid- wifery service offered by Auburn Hospital that allows women and their babies a range of postnatal care and support in their own home rather than in hospital. The Midwifery@Home Service is an area-wide program run by Sydney West Area Health Service (SWAHS) and is made up of a team of experienced registered midwives. Auburn Hospital's clinical mid- wifery specialist Sandra Ferguson said the service was growing in popularity, with more mums choosing the familiarity and comfort of their own home. ''In September there were 103 births at Auburn Hospital and 85 of the mothers -- 83 per cent -- chose to go home earlier and access the Midwifery@Home service,'' Ms Ferguson said. ''Our previous high was in March, with 81 per cent of mums choosing to use the service. ''As more women and families hear about the service, I would imagine that number to grow in the future.'' Ms Ferguson attributed the suc- cess of the service to its flexibility and said midwives talked with the new mum and together they agreed on the most appropriate form of follow-up to suit their individual needs and circum- stances. ''Our midwives offer support in breastfeeding, infant behavior and care, returning to work, travelling overseas, sibling rivalry, com- munity supports and, lately, ac- cess to useful internet sites,'' Ms Ferguson said. ''Our overall aim is to try to help the women gain confidence in themselves as mothers.'' Ms Ferguson said many of the mothers at Auburn Hospital were from non-English speaking back- grounds. ''We are aware of the need to be sensitive to different cultural cus- toms and beliefs and we utilise health care interpreters to assist us with our visits if needed.'' For details phone 9845 5555. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP205648 ONE of the Inner West's first community-based childcare centres came of age recently. Some of the first students from Abbotsford Long Day Care Centre, now in their 20s, re- turned to the centre to celebrate its 21st birthday at a Family Fun Day on October 19. The centre opened its doors to the community in 1987 and continues to provide childcare that combines community- resources, parent-involvement and staff dedication. Two of the centre's original staff members, Anita Martin and Robyn Bugeja, began work- ing at the centre on its opening day and are still there today. Centre director Michelle Sidoti said the Abbotsford Long Day Care Centre's philosophy had not changed over the years. ''Our approach is to put the children at the forefront of everything we do,'' she said. ''As a community-based centre we work in partnership with families to give children the best possible start in life. ''The early childhood years are a vital step in children's education.'' 2320121i gww w18 56a Moore St LEICHHARDT 9560 9262 or 0408 229 341 Does your animal suffer from back or neck pain, arthritis, injuries, or require post-op rehabilitation?
