2 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 6, 2008 MB NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Family grieve for fisherman From Page 1 Mr Anwar said about 7.45pm when he came home from work Mr Fernando had wanted to go fishing. ''We got to Bayview Park and after about 10 minutes of trying to catch a fish he decided it wasn't working so we moved to where the car unloads the boats,'' Mr Anwar said. ''He told me to stand as far back as I could because he was going to throw the reel very far. ''He went to the top of the driveway where the slope started and spun the line and then he lost his balance and started falling down. ''IrantohimandIthoughthe could swim so I was asking if he was OK a few times and he didn't reply at all and then I started crawling down the slope.'' Mr Anwar said he eventually got a hold of his leg and held on tight while police were called. A male jogger helped pull Mr Fernando out of the water, but Mr Anwar said he was not responding. Mr Fernando has been de- scribed by friends including Mano Fangarapillar and Chandra Balachandran as a very nice person who always offered a helping hand to people. Unfortunately Mr Fernando has no family living in Aust- ralia. His wife Vinoly and seven- year-old son Kevin are in Sri Lanka and the last time they saw him was six months ago when he went home for a hol- iday. Friends say the family are in shock. Mr Balachandran, Mr Fernando's friend of 22 years, is urgently trying to raise $10,000 to either send his body home or to bring his wife and son to Australia for his funeral. To make a donation contact Chandra Balachandran on 0401 737 755. He urges amateurs to take care not to hook other people, especially those behind them. ''If you're in a boat, wear a life jacket,'' he said. ''Off the rocks, you would stay well back from the water and always keep an eye on it. On the wharf, don't stay close to the edge. ''And of course keep your fishing gear and rods clear of you, to prevent tripping over them and falling.''
