MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 6, 2008 7 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Nonno's garden of love SHIREEN KHALIL Oreste and Maria Piccolo in their prize-winning Haberfield garden. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP211904 Take a virtual stroll through the winning Piccolo garden online at www.innerwestweekly.com.au ORESTE and his wife Maria Pic- colo knew they had a beautiful garden, it was winning the 2008 Haberfield Large Garden of the Year, that confirmed it. For the first time Mr and Mrs Piccolo decided to enter the Haberfield Garden of the Year and despite despite their obvious green fingers, they never thought they would win. ''My grandson said to me 'Nonno I believed you when you said you had a beautiful garden and the best in Haberfield, and now it's confirmed','' Mr Piccolo said. When the Italian couple bought their house 21 years ago, they admitted it wasn't the house they fell in love with, but the garden. ''We walked straight through the house to the garden and I said to my wife 'look at this, I like it'.'' ''I was in love with the ground and I thought to do something about it.'' Mr Piccolo said the garden looked nothing like what it does today. ''Over 15 years my wife and I built it up,'' he said. ''We put in a vegetable garden, wishing wells, water fountains and I also built a cubby house for my grandchildren.'' The garden is filled with over 30 different types of plants, each positioned uniquely to capture a ''relaxing and beautiful'' environ- ment. Mr Piccolo says his garden is his life. ''I look forward to seeing the progress and for me it's not work because I enjoy it,'' he said. ''I enjoy being surrounded by green- ery and just listening to the water from the waterfalls.'' The Haberfield Garden of the Year winners last week received $250. ''It makes me feel very proud of my garden to win and we had over 50 people come over on the week- end to look, and they all said they'd never seen anything like it, which made me feel even more happy and proud,'' Mr Piccolo said. Reward for murder info A $100,000 reward is on offer for information leading to the arrest of those who murdered Ashfield man Bernd Lehmann (pictured). The 66-year-old German national was found battered to death in his Alt St home on Valentine's Day this year. State Police Minister Tony Kelly said the reward would be available to anyone who provided infor- mation that led to the arrest and conviction of his killers. ''This is a particularly shocking crime,'' he said. ''Mr Lehmann had been violently attacked and suffered severe head wounds. The initial investigation has led police to believe (he) may have known his attacker.'' Mr Lehmann, who worked in a care home in Ashfield, was last seen in his driveway at 11.15am on February 12. At 5pm that day he was due to fly to Germany to spend three months looking after his gravely-ill mother. Mr Kelly said police were par- ticularly interested to know how Mr Lehmann was intending to travel to the airport. They hope the reward will en- courage potential witnesses to come forward with information. ''It might seem like an insignifi- cant piece of information, but it might just be the missing piece of the puzzle that leads to criminal charges,'' Mr Kelly said. He asked people to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Get a great price in the Inner West. Love the Inner West? Well, we're making it even better.
