MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 6, 2008 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Fun park won't be so reserved FIONA BRADY Natalie Haddad and son Luke, of Five Dock, enjoy the Roberts Reserve Playground at Rodd Point. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP211908 PLAYTIME will soon be more fun in Rodd Point with the news that a local playground is to get a $20,000 upgrade. Thanks to funding from the State Government, the playground in Roberts Reserve in Noble St will receive new equipment and re- placement surfacing. Natalie Haddad, a Five Dock mum who has been campaigning for playgrounds in Canada Bay to be upgraded, is delighted with the news. ''This is a wonderful outcome for the families of Canada Bay,'' she said. Ms Haddad said families didn't always want to go to the ''mini- Luna Parks'', but to the local playground closest to their home. ''We want to just have a short walk and have fun and meet other members of the community,'' she said. Drummoyne State Labor MP Angela D'Amore said it was vital to have good outdoor play spaces for kids in the local area. ''Better outdoor spaces will en- courage children to exercise as well as help tackle the childhood obesity problem currently affect- ing much of the developed world,'' she said. The $20,000 funding was awarded to Canada Bay Council under the first round of the $2 million Local Government Playground Grants program. Ms D'Amore encouraged all councils to apply for other grants before November 21. CONTACT: Anyone with information should call Sarah Bowers on 0416 507 092 AN ELDERLY couple are devas- tated after thieves stole their bag containing valuable and sentimen- tal jewellery at Strathfield station. The couple, who did not want to be named, had been travelling by CountryLink from Casino to Mel- bourne on September 30. Their luggage was supposed to have been checked all the way through, but was mistakenly taken off at Strathfield and left unattended about 7.20am. The couple's granddaughter Sarah Bowers said the bag was khaki and about 70cm tall. As well as clothes and shoes, it contained jewellery which she said was of ''tremendous senti- mental value'' -- including her grandmother's engagement ring. ''One of the necklaces was given to her as a Christening present 84 years ago by her parents,'' she said. ''That's of huge sentimental value and she'd told me she'd give a reward to the person who re- turned it.'' Ms Bowers said CCTV footage had shown that the thieves had grabbed the bag off a trolley within a compound, before jump- ing on a train on the Gosford line. ''It's probably a long shot that we might get any of the jewellery back, but it is worth a try,'' she said. A spokesman for CountryLink said they were still investigating the matter, but added that they always reminded customers to take out travel insurance.
