14 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 6, 2008 MB NEWS Hell ride for kids ZILKA GROGAN Ian Carter, at Enfield Pool, is riding from Melbourne to Sydney for charity. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP212082 FOR Ian Carter, a three-day non-stop bike ride between Melbourne and Sydney is an opportunity to put his training as an army reservist to good use. This Friday, Mr Carter will start the trip from Melbourne's Federation Square to the Sydney Opera House, with only small rest breaks along the way, to raise funds for the Sydney Children's Hospital. The Mel2Syd Non-Stop Bike Ride starts at 9am and the team expect to reach Sydney on Sunday. Mr Carter, of Croydon Park, organised the ride for the first time last year and hopes to make it an annual event. He said the ride represented the struggle that many kids face during their time in hospital. ''To do it non-stop when you're not a professional cyclists, it's a big ask,'' Mr Carter said. ''I put myself through hell for this but I wouldn't have it any other way because compared to what these kids go through it's nothing.'' The community has shown strong support for the initiative. Sausage sizzles have been held at Enfield Swim Centre, where Mr Carter works as a swimming teacher, to promote the ride and raise funds. Last year the event raised more than $6000.
