26 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 6, 2008 MB Deborah sings under stars FIONA BRADY Deborah Cheetham is the star of Opera at Rivendell next week. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP211522 SHE'S been busy composing Australia's first indigenous opera, but next week virtuoso indigenous soprano Deborah Cheetham will take a break to sing under the stars at the Rivendell estate in Concord. It will be her first time performing at the fundraising Opera at Rivendell event and Cheetham is hoping to see a few familiar faces in the audience. ''I spent most of my teaching career in that area so it's really nice to come back and I expect that there will be students and parents that I've known over the years that will be interested in coming along, or at least I hope they will,'' she said. Then it'll be back to writing and composing her opera -- Pecan Summer -- inspired by the story of the Yorta Yorta people's walk-off at the Cummeragunja mission in 1939. ''It's an epic story and I think one that's really suited to opera,'' she said. She decided to write it after 17 years of being Australia's only indigenous classically-trained soprano. ''I just figured after 17 years of me being the only one, I had to ask 'why, where is everybody else?' and I think it is because there isn't a clearly-defined pathway for indigenous people in the world of classical vocal music,'' she said. ''So I decided that I'd make one.'' Cheetham is also author of the acclaimed autobiographical play, White Baptist Abba Fan about her life as a member of the Stolen Generation adopted into a white middle-class church-going family. The play also deals with the discrimination Cheetham faced when she came out as a lesbian. ''If you're a gay Koori opera singer you're probably as marginalised as you possibly can be,'' she said. Cheetham said her dearest wish was for Pecan Summer to be a launching pad for the careers of other Indigenous singers. Anything else? ''There are still roles that I want to sing that I haven't sung,'' she said. '''I feel that I'm singing the best Ieverhavenowat43andsoyou know, I'm ready to take it on.''
