Burwood Mayor Lesley Furneaux-Cook recently paid a visit to Burwood SES to meet with the 16 volunteers where she presented service medallions in recognition for their continued efforts, particularly the response and recovery surrounding a major storm event in June 2007 that effected the greater Sydney, Central Coast and Newcastle. On behalf of the council and the com- munity, the mayor thanked the members for the effort and time dedicated to assisting the community during times of storms and at local community events, ''The SES provide an essential service to Australia and it's an honour to present these medallions to the dedicated volun- teers who serve our community,'' Cr Furneaux-Cook said. NEWS Street attack and rifles in a park CRIME STOPPERS 1800 333 000 on the beat 1 3 4 2 An officer with the guns that were found. 1 A MAN has been charged with robbing an elderly woman in Mintaro Ave, Strathfield, on Saturday. The woman, 70, was walking with a cane at 11.15am when the man allegedly grabbed her from behind and stole her purse. When the alleged offender tried to flee, he was chased and caught by a passer-by who restrained him until police arrived. He was charged with robbery and was released on conditional bail to appear in Burwood Court on December 2. 2 An EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy found five guns in a bag at a park in Lidcombe last Tuesday. The boy was walking through Phillips Park in Nicholas St about 6pm when he stumbled across the bag, then ran home and told a family member, who notified police. Flemington police officers doorknocked the area and searched the park. Police described the weapons as ''high- powered rifles''. Three were SKS self- loading rifles, one with a bayonet. None of the weapons could have been fired, police said, and no ammunition was found. The boy was walking by himself to school along High St at 8.50am when he saw a silver sedan on the road next to him. The youngster told police the driver spoke to him through the open passenger- side window and offered him a lift to school. He refused and ran to school where he reported the incident. The man was described as being about 50 years of age, of Middle Eastern- Mediterranean appearance, of medium build with an olive complexion and short grey hair. Two homes, a business premises in Lidcombe and a number of vehicles were searched as part of the operation. Two Sefton men, one aged 26 and another 60, and a 38-year-old Granville man have been charged with breaches of the Copy- right Act in the Australian Federal Police operation.
