Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : November 12th 2008
16 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 13, 2008 MB NEWS Kokoda, a trek of life Kimberley Counter, of North Strathfield, was chosen to walk the Kokoda Track. ZILKA GROGAN KIMBERLEY Counter faced extreme humidity, vertical climbs and descents, and 13 hours per day of trekking to retrace the footsteps of our Kokoda war heroes. The North Strathfield resident was one of 26 teenagers from around NSW chosen to walk the Kokoda Track in August. Gladesville RSL awarded Kimberley the trip for an essay about a car accident she was in as a child and how it affected her family. ''You had to relate mateship, courage, endur- ance and sacrifice and how these four factors affected your life,'' she said. As well as making some lifelong friends, the trip taught Kimberley about Australia's wartime his- tory. ''I learnt about the Aussie troops and how what they went through really dra- matically changed Aust- ralian history,'' she said. ''What they went through was probably a hundred times harder than what I did.'' The 17-year-old also ex- perienced poverty for the first time. ''They cherish what they have,'' she said. ''What we have is com- pletely different and we don't really appreciate life the way we should.'' The Kokoda Youth Lead- ership Challenge is spon- sored by the RSL Service Clubs Association and tar- gets young Australians who have leadership potential. Kimberely is already planning her return trip to Kokoda in a few years' time. ''I really want to go back and do it again,'' she said. ''I'll be older this time and it is the most beautiful place on Earth.'' Take the first step to meditation LEARN how to meditate at a special event in the Ashfield Civic Centre this Friday at 1pm.
