Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : November 12th 2008
18 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 13, 2008 ONE DEGREE OF CHANGE -- IT'S ABOUT EVERY ONE OF US Local heroes Leading lights It's a fact Planet Ark's call to get your recycling right It's National Recycling Week and Planet Ark's message is Recycle Right. It is encouraging Australians to recycle properly to save water, conserve resources, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to combat climate change. More than 90 per cent of Australians use household kerbside collections to recycle bottles, cans, jars and paper they use at home. But Planet Ark warns that a single plastic bag can shut down an entire material recovery facility if it gets caught in its machinery; and just 5g of drink ware glass or Pyrex in a recycling bin can contaminate a tonne of recyclable bottle and jar glass because it melts at a different temperature. ''Contamination of the recycling process is a significant, yet entirely avoidable problem," Planet Ark spokeswoman Rebecca Gilling said. ''When we Recycle Right we minimise contamination, reduce landfill, and maximise the benefits to the environment.'' For more ideas visit RecyclingWeek.PlanetArk.org or call 1300 733 712. Council's money for rubbish TWO local councils are to receive more than $250,000 from the State Government as a reward for improv- ing their recycling services and cutting waste. State Labor MP Angela D'Amore said Canada Bay and Strathfield Council are recipients of the Waste Service Improvement Performance Pay- ments. ''This money is acknowledgment of the hard work put in by locals to do their bit for the environment, Canada Bay Council has received $168,000 and Strathfield Council has received $82,696,'' she said. ''Last year kerbside recycling across the state recovered more than 650,000 tonnes of waste saving more than 320,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions -- equivalent to taking almost 80,000 cars off the road permanently. ''The efforts of the local community in sorting their rubbish every week are being rewarded with millions of dollars handed back to councils.'' Markets win award New meaning to three Rs: Reduce, re-use and recycle Sydney Markets at Flemington has received a prestigious award for Environmental Sustainability practices in a wholesale market from the World Union of Wholesale Markets. The award was presented to Sydney Markets Limited at a gala dinner at Copenhagen City Hall, Denmark last month in front of 300 representatives from Wholesale Markets all around the world. ''We are proud of this wonderful achievement, which would not have been possible without the hard work, dedication and commitment from our Environmental Team who are committed to ensure the best practices and procedures apply to our environmental sustainability program,'' Sydney Markets CEO Bradley Latham said. Flemington is the largest market in Australia. An estimated 2.5 million tonnes of fresh produce is sold annually, valued at over $3 billion. The Environment and Climate Change, Department has recognised Sydney Markets as one of only four companies to receive a three-star rating acknowledging environmental sustainable management procedures.
