Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : November 12th 2008
28 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 13, 2008 STREETVIEW Reasons to remember Dina Rizzuto Phil Sharkey Abrahim Khalil Nicola Otten Pamela Adams Remembrance Day -- also known as Armistice Day or Poppy Day -- was celebrated on Tuesday to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. It is a day to remember the sacrifices of soldiers in times of war. Services were held at 11am at war memorials across the country, and the memory of soldiers was honoured by one minute of silence. We asked people on the street in Five Dock what it means to them? Dina Rizzuto, of Haberfield: I am not very familiar with the day but I do think it is very important to remember the sacrifices of the soldiers. For some people to say that it is not relevant to Australians to celebrate the day is wrong. Phil Sharkey, of Abbotsford: I think a day like that is very significant. We need to remember what happened in the past to make sure that we don't do the same errors again. Abrahim Khalil, of Five Dock: It is an important day because the soldiers defended the country and helped people to get freedom. I think it is still relevant for people to celebrate it because of the good things they did. Nicola Otten, of Croydon: I haven't really thought of it (Remembrance Day) but I do think it is very important to remember the past. I will try to remember to stop and think of it at 11am on the day. I don't have any family that was involved in it and I think it is something you would never want anyone to go through. It is really horrible and tragic what families of soldiers must have been through during the war. Pamela Adams, of Russell Lea: I think Remembrance Day is still relevant to people, definitely. As for the youths, I think they want to know about their history. We should remember the sacrifices of soldiers because we have lost so many of our boys in war. I always go down to North Ryde RSL for war memorials.
