Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : November 12th 2008
52 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 13, 2008 MB Inner-West Weekly Sport Amber likes it tough BOEL ERIKSSON JUNIOR SPORTS STAR Amber McIndoe, of Five Dock, takes the gentle way to winning. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP214649 JUDO means ''gentle way'' in Japanese, but there is nothing gentle about Five Dock resident Amber McIndoe's combat moves when she competes in the martial art. ''I'm pretty tough,'' she said. ''It is a tough sport -- that is one reason why I like it. ''But I'm a fair competitor -- I always congratulate the other per- son,'' she said. The young judoka, who turns 13 next month, got into judo through her parents Belinda and Leon. They both used to compete in the sport when they were younger, and Leon is an instructor at Amber's club Judo Venue in Homebush. Both mum and dad are put to good use when Amber wants to do some extra training at home, es- pecially to prepare for important competitions. Her dad has a black belt and often trains with her at home, however Amber says her mum is sometimes a better opponent. ''Mum is sort of the same size as me -- she is nice and light which is good because I can throw her around,'' she said. Despite starting her training in the sport only two years ago, Amber has already earned herself a blue belt and is currently rank- ing second best in Australia in the under-13s/under-52kg category. She scored the ranking in the national championships in Castle Hill in June but Amber said it took her a couple of weeks to realise how well she had done. ''It wasn't until I started telling my friends about it that I realised how good it was,'' she said. ''It was pretty exciting.'' ''I like to challenge myself to do things others can't do.'' She believes a good judoka needs to have ''good strategy and a good technique''. ''Hopefully one day I will be able to compete in the Olympics to show people what I can do.'' Junior Sports Star entries have closed. The winner will be announced in February. bring your floors to life Multi Award WINNER!
