Anton Fernando, 34, lost his life when he was fishing on Wednesday, October 29, with hand reels at Bayview Park where he slipped and fell into the water. While Mr Fernando has no family living in Australia, his long-time friend Chandra Balachandran set up an appeal to raise money to send his body back to Sri Lanka to his wife Vinoly and son Kevin. ''I collected roughly $14,000 from the Inner-West Weekly's effort, the local community and Tamil organisations,'' Mr Balachandran said. ''After the cost of send-off, I have a balance of $6000 left which I have decided to deposit in a trust account for the parents, wife and son's future.'' Mr Balachandran said the highest amount he received was a $1500 cheque from a Tamil organisation called Eelam Tamil Association. A memorial service was held last Saturday in Auburn for Mr Fernando's friends living in Australia. ''The viewing went for one hour and there were about 100 to 150 people and we had a little prayer for Anton,'' Mr Balachandran said.
