You'll be in the running to win $2000 cash and prizes as we see who can sow and grow Sydney's best pumpkins in the next five months. It's easy, and it's something the whole family can take part in this summer. Never grown anything before? That's OK; we will tell you everything you need to know about growing a pumpkin. Just pick up the paper each week and our experts will guide you on how to plant, care for and harvest your pumpkin. You will be growing atlantic giant seeds, a special variety chosen for its propensity to grow bigger than any other pumpkin strain in the world. The strain was developed by Canadian grower Howard Dill about 30 years ago and has become popular among competitive gardeners who aspire to grow enormous vegetables. Atlantic giants have been known to grow as big as 766 kg -- that's a lot of pumpkin. As part of the challenge, pumpkin growers will have their produce entered into a special competition for the 2009 Sydney Royal Easter Show. The enormous pumpkin progeny will put you in good stead when it comes to entering the first of the five different categories of the challenge -- the giant pumpkin. The other categories include: Best decorated (pumpkins need not be ripe); Most unusual shape (pumpkins need not be ripe); Celebrity look-alike pumpkin (pumpkins need not be ripe); Smallest (pumpkins must be ripe).
