Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : November 19th 2008
20 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 20, 2008 MB STREETVIEW Pressure on price not fun Mary Heckendorf Sule Turegun Melissa Murray Sam Awad Mike Cormack There will be thousands of students who would disagree with some Inner West locals who think Year 12 formals are overrated and too pricey. We put the question to people in Burwood and got some very interesting answers. Mary Heckendorf, of Cronulla: I don't think formals are overrated; it's great for kids to celebrate. Students who are 18 should be able to let their hair down and have fun. My daughter went to PLC and spent about $300 on a beautiful frock and she has worn it over again. I don't think there should be a limit on spending, it really depends on the parents' income. It's for the child and parents to decide. Kids should be able to enjoy their formals and spend time with friends they will never see again. Sule Turegun, of Burwood: Girls go way overboard these days; it's like a mini- wedding. There's a lot of pressure to wear designer outfits and it's just too much. I spent about $150 on my dress and I did my own hair and make-up. Melissa Murray, of Burwood: For my Year 12 formal I felt a lot of pressure to look good. There was pressure on who was going to have the nicest dress, good car to turn up in and I probably spent $1000 all up and I wore my $500 dress only once. I think it's overrated and you're putting pressure on your parents to have the same extravagance as everyone else. Sam Awad, of Kingsgrove: These days it's too much and the more flashy and shorter the dress, the more attention. I mean if I had the money I would put in the effort and probably spend $200 on a suit but at the end of the day, both boys and girls just want the spotlight on them. Mike Cormack, of Newtown: I think they're a big event and they echo through life so I don't think they are overrated. It's a treat night, but a limit of a couple of hundred should be set. There's entertainment in the air and it's a good environment.
