Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : November 19th 2008
34 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 20, 2008 MB advertising feature rejuvenate 2106503K wk21 a ette bite NE OF THE MOST COMMON BATTLEGROUNDS FOR PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN IS THE DINNER TABLE. Ensuring your children eat a healthy diet is increasingly difficult in a world awash with convenience food and takeaway, but the earlier you start, the better. We all know a good diet provides us with the energy and nutrients to get the most out of our busy lives, but encouraging a recalcitrant small child or rebellious teenager who hates greens to eat the recommended five serves of vegetables and two of fruit every day is often not easy. And who wants to spend mealtimes locked n combat ove every mouthful? Right from the tart, encoura your children eat a wide ran resh fruit, veget ables, wholegrains, lean protein and dairy products. The fresher and more colourful you make the food, the better -- and if fingers are what it takes to get the food from the plate and into little mouths, try to cultivate a relaxed attitude. There's plenty of time to learn to use cutlery. Once your children start going to school, the dietary dramas can get a little more complicated -- it's just so easy to throw that healthy apple into the bin or swap your salad sandwich for something less nutritious but full of sugar or fat. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so try making it the most special as well. Smoothies full of fresh fruit taste delicious and don't look like health food at all. For something a little more glam but refreshingly simple, try layering yoghurt, fruit and muesli in a parfait glass to be eaten with a long spoon. If you have time, you could put together a breakfast buffet with sliced fruit, vegetable sticks, hard-boiled eggs and wholemeal muffins to tempt fussy eaters. Lunch can be an assortment of fruit segments, nuts, vegetable sticks, seeds and cheese cubes kept fresh in plastic containers with a wholemeal sandwich or crackers to extra crunch, while dinner should be enjoyed TV free. Try to get your children involved in the T shopping and preparation of the food they are going to eat, or get them to grow their own in the vegetable garden. Provide a range of nutritious foods, keep the unhealthy snacks out of the cupboard and offer as wide a variety as possible. Before you know it, table tantrums will be a thing of the past and your entire family will be bursting with the energy offered by their nutritious diet. O The fresher and more colourful you make the food, the better. family food for the Eating at the table as a family is a great way to teach by example. So if you avoid eating your greens and prefer to cover everything in tomato sauce and salt, you might be teaching the children more than you bargained for. Make sure you set a good example. Meal times should be relaxed and social. Turn off the television, ban the mobiles and settle back to give the food and the company your full attention. Children of all ages should be encouraged to help prepare food. It's a nice way to spend quality time and learn a few useful life skills. Children don't have to miss out on sweets and fast foods entirely. But they should learn the difference between everyday foods and those that are occasional treats. Variety is the spice of life -- offer children as many different foods as you can. Even fussy eaters will gradually come up with a selection they enjoy, making the family's culinary life much more interesting. Small children don't have the same attention span as adults, so don't expect them to sit quietly and plough diligently through the meal. Relax about the wriggling and mess and everyone will avoid indigestion. Dear friend, Confessions are tough. Real tough. But sometimes a confession can set the record straight and I want to give credit where credit is due. Before I talk about my confession though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, "Oh, yeah, I know you, you're Nick. I've seen your ad with that picture of you and the little boy." Well, I'm the guy on the bike. Years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. Let me tell you my story. "It's years ago, but I remember it well. At the time, I'm working at a desk job and all is going well. But, then it happens...my left hand starts to get weak and lose feeling. Within a few weeks, I can hardly clinch my fists, use my car keys, and sometimes I can't even button my shirt. To say the least, I'm scared about what's going on. And, that's not all... Soon, the problem gets so bad that I'm afraid of losing my job if it continues. My local doctor refers me to a specialist but I can't get an appointment for six weeks. As I wait to see him, my hand just gets worse. Now, listen to this... Finally, a friend of mine convinces me to give a different specialist a try. That specialist does an exam, takes some films and then "adjusts" my spine, the joints of my shoulder, and elbow. That adjustment doesn't hurt, it actually feels good. And, I get feeling and strength back to my hand. And by the way, that different specialist is a chiropractor. Chiropractic works so well for me that I eventually go to chiropractic school myself. Now for the photo. The little guy is Edward and his mum brings him to see me every few months or so. At home, Eddie loves jumping off the couch, down the stairs or whatever he can climb up. He's always getting into mischief and just loves to play. It's no wonder that he sometimes takes a fall. His mum knows enough to ask me to adjust him when he feels like he might be getting sick, or just to stay "tuned up" . Eddie's mum had all sorts of aches and pains, especially during her pregnancy with him. She has recently just had a beautiful little girl and again relies on me to provide her with much needed relief from neck, shoulder and back pain. I think being a mum can take its toll on the body, but she does such a great job. It's strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their wrist and hand problems. Also they come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, poor posture/scoliosis, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, just to name a few. Here's what some of my patients had to say: My sinus headaches have disappeared and my posture has improved. I have referred family and friends. Thank You Nick.( Kristy Neville -- Newtown) Since I've been seeing Nick my disc injury steadily improved and I'm back to living a normal and active lifestyle. Can't recommend him enough! (Keith Yong -- Burwood) Since coming to see Nick my posture has improved and all neck and shoulder pain has disappeared. I feel great! I'd highly recommend him to anyone. (Karen Wacando, Yoga Teacher- West Ryde) Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can't really take the credit. My confession is that I've never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It's as simple as that! Being a chiropractor can be tough, because there's a host of so-called experts out there. They tell people a lot of things that are just plain ridiculous about my profession. But the studies speak for themselves, like the Macquarie University study that showed that specific chiropractic adjustments to the spine significantly reduced migraines in 71 per cent of the people surveyed. Another headache study, comparing a course of chiropractic care with a course of anti-inflammatory drugs showed chiropractic care to be 250 times safer. That's just incredible! Many Australians these days can no longer afford health insurance, and those that can have found that their benefits are reduced. That's where chiropractic comes in. Many people find that they actually save money on their health care expenses by seeing a chiropractor. Published, peer-reviewed research indicates that the immune system may be enhanced by chiropractic adjustments. The immune system is the system that helps the body fight colds, the flu, and many other sicknesses. Although all people respond differently to care, maybe you won't be running off to the doctor as much once you start chiropractic. This is especially important if you are self-employed. And an entire week of care in my office may cost what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer: Look, it shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a cheque to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article, you will receive my entire new patient exam for $17. (If you are with an eligible health fund we offer on the spot rebates -- just bring your card in) This complete exam includes a computerized spinal scan- which quickly pinpoints the exact location of muscular and spinal problems with immediate results. Also included is a full structural, muscular and nerve exam and any necessary x-rays. My exam includes everything you need to get checked out properly as well as a detailed explanation of results. There are no hidden fees here. This exam could cost you $150 elsewhere. But, please call right away because this offer expires on the 11th of December 2008, and I don't want you to miss out. By the way, further care is very affordable and you'll be happy to know that I have affordable family plans.
