Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP220143 DESIGNING a coffin must be one of the more unusual briefs given to students at Tafe's Lidcombe Design Centre. But for student Stephanie Serra-Martin, pictured with her stamp-themed coffin, it surprisingly turned out to be ''quite fun''. Ms Serra-Martin and 100 of her fellow students were asked to come up with a design for LifeArt Australia -- a manufacturer of personalised and environmentally friendly Enviroboard coffins based in Silverwater. Their brief was to come up with a design that celebrated life and would be admired by people aged 70 to 90. ''It was quite surprising when we were told in interior decorating that we had to design a graphic for a coffin,'' she said. ''It was quite fun because I like doing graphics.'' Ms Serra-Martin was delighted to find out that her stamp design is one of two to be included in LifeArt's commercial range in 2009. ''I actually want to be told when someone picks mine,'' she said. Lidcombe Design's head teacher Kathy Marshall said the students found the project ''completely life-affirming''. ''This was definitely left field but quickly became one of the more enjoyable projects and really challenged the students because of the emotionally sensitive aspect of the project,'' she said. The finalist's designs will be on display in Lidcombe Design's end-of-year exhibition, Xposed. It opens at 6.30pm on Wednesday, December 3, at the Tafe in East St, Lidcombe. The exhibition continues until Tuesday, December 9. Phone 9643 4501.
