36 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 27, 2008 MB Lighting up the garden made easy Hardware markets offer several DIY garden lighting systems, yet there is nothing to stop you custom-designing your system for a garden, pathway or outdoor entertaining area. All garden lighting systems are low voltage and run off a transformer which plugs into an electric socket. The first step is to decide on the areas you want illuminated and how you would like them lit. If it is practical illumination you are after you will probably need only step lights or spike lights. If you want to highlight a feature you need up-lights with higher wattage. Decide on your lighting plan and measure the area before consulting a lighting supplier. The supplier will advise you on the type and number of lights, the amount of cable and the type of transformer you will need. Lay out your lights in their desired locations and lay the cable to match along the network. Use 10m cable for the first length, which goes from the transformer to the first light, to avoid any voltage drop. If you want to conceal the wires below the ground, no more than 100mm depth is required. Cut the cable to the correct length and bare the two strands of wire within the cable. Join the two strands of wire to one of the wires on the light, twist and cap with one of the plastic caps with which you have been supplied. Pass a naked flame over and around the heat-shrink cap. Once you see it contracting or bubbling slightly an adequate seal has been achieved. From the first light onwards, you can use 6mm cable. Cut that cable, bare the wires, join them to the first lights other cable, twist together and seal with another heat-shrink cap. Repeat this process to the end of the network.
