48 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, November 27, 2008 MB Inner-West Weekly Sport Earle on fast-track SHIREEN KHALIL The best advice I've been given is to never give up' ' MARISSA EARLE Short-track speed ice-skater Marissa Earle. MARISSA Earle is off to a flying start after she was one of only 20 short-track speed ice-skaters glo- bally selected for a sports scholar- ship by the International Skating Union. The Croydon Park skater was one of many young athletes rep- resenting Australia in the ISU Junior World Competition in Italy this year, when she was selected by the ISU to receive a financial scholarship to assist with her sporting development. Earle, 18, said she did not expect the scholarship and was surprised when she received the phone call. ''I found out only a couple of weeks ago that I was selected and it was such a surprise,'' Earle said. ''I didn't expect it at all, but I'm really proud.'' The former Meriden student said the scholarship would help her parents financially. ''It will help out my parents a lot, who pay a couple of grand a year, and they don't have to pay for me next year, which is great.'' Earle currently trains every day for two hours at Canterbury Ice Skating Rink and is looking for- ward to starting the scholarship where she will train overseas for two years. Earle, who has been speed skat- ing for 12 years, was not only the National Ladies Champion for her age events for six years, but was also selected to form part of the 2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival team. One of her many great achieve- ments was coming first in the Munich Challenge in Germany earlier this year. Earle said the best part of the sport, besides it being unpredict- able, was getting to see other countries and meeting new people. ''The best advice I've been given is to never give up,'' Earle said. And it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon as her main goal is to represent Australian in the 2010 Winter Olympics. bring your floors to life Multi Award WINNER!
