Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : December 3rd 2008
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, December 4, 2008 31 Every dog has its day here ROBYN AINSWORTH Frances with dogs Paddy and Tricky at the Hawthorne Canal dog walking park. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP222020 DOG PARKS EVERY dog has a great day in the Inner West, when it comes to friendly play areas. Canada Bay Council leads the way (no pun intended) with 11 unrestricted off-leash areas and four after-hours areas. Dogs have their choice of scenic, water- side venues and spacious, open areas to let off some steam. At Drummoyne Park, above the oval, pooches can even catch a bit of the cricket action if they fancy that and a game is in swing. And at Lysaght Park on Five Dock Bay, they can stretch out for a run. Henley Park, Enfield's off-leash area officially opened last Saturday. The dog-friendly fenced area is on the former bowling club site, and small dogs have their own area so they are protected by bigger dogs, if needed. Burwood Council has planted new and established trees, laid turf, and installed taps and bins with disposable bags. While creating the new area, council workers found a little cross, built in memory of Pal, the mascot dog of the former bowling club. The cross was saved while the works were carried out, and will be repositioned in the off-leash area. Mayor Lesley Furneaux-Cook has proposed to dedicate the off- leash area to Pal, so the area might be named Pal Park. Ashfield Coun- cil has one off- leash area at Cadigal Reserve, on the tip of Grosvenor Cres, Summer Hill, next to Hawthorne Canal, which is avail- able at all times. Further north along Hawthorne Canal (and technically in Leichhardt), is the Inner West's most popular dog area. Famous for its Cafe Bones, where humans indulge in capuccinos and their best friends are tempted by pupaccinos, the canal is a magnet for doggie types from across the region. If your dog prefers a river to a canal, go down to the Elliott Reserve on the Cooks River at Belfield where they can gleefully run wild. But remember, no matter where you go, pick up the poo and stay away from children's play areas. 6 of the best gift ideas for Mum & Dad Burwood and the kids Men's Graphic Belt $29.99 Jeanswest Men's Check Shirt $49.99 Jeanswest Stripe Tote $24.99 Jeanswest Organic Tee and Gift Bag $39.95 each Sportscraft Chris Lilley Series Collection on sale $59.95 ABC Shop Sterling Silver Hand Crafted Ring with Crystal Opal $53.00 Magnolia Silver They can have it all with a Westfield Gift Card.
