54 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, December 4, 2008 MB DINING Alive www.innerwestweekly.com.au Simply fresh lunch options NAME: Last Drop Cafe WHERE: 538 Marrickville Rd, Dulwich Hill. Phone 9572 9800 OPEN: Weekdays, 7.30am to 5.30pm, Saturday 7.30am to 4pm PROFILE: Lana Lam Soula and Con Kazantzidis from the Last Drop Cafe in Dulwich Hill. Picture: DANNY AARONS TEN years ago, Dulwich Hill's main strip was a nondescript collection of suburban shops. Fast forward to 2008 -- and a short stroll down Marrickville Rd proves to be a cosmopolitan affair. Owner Con Kazantzidis said it was a work in progress. ''In 1999, we were the only cafe here,'' he said. ''It was a gamble, but we haven't looked back.'' The former high school teacher used to juggle science classes and barista duties, but now focuses on the cafe. He spends his day off on Sunday visiting other cafes to keep an eye on the competition. Most of the food is homemade by Con's mum, Soula, including the lentil and vegetable soup ($9). She uses Canadian green lentils in a light broth with celery, carrots, onion, potatoes, garlic and virgin olive oil. ''The emphasis here is Mediterranean and Greek,'' Mr Kazantzidis said. Popular dishes include the meatballs and sauce served with rice, similar to the Italian dish but with a Greek flavour. When we dropped by for a light lunch, we sampled the lentil soup and vegetable frittata with salad ($9.50). Both were great light lunch options, with a focus on simple fresh ingredients and well- proportioned servings. There's a steady flow of customers during lunch, with some popping in for a slice of cake ($7) or a hearty meal such as moussaka ($11) or the mezze platter ($16). The cafe's website is a comprehensive offering with Soula's recipes, news of TV stars dropping by and a blog of artists who exhibit at the cafe. At the moment, the walls are adorned with photographs from local artists Lisa Hogben and Jack Carnegie. Hogben's lush landscape images of the Snowy River sit alongside Carnegie's gentle observations of the world. Every six weeks, there's a new exhibition from a local artist. Mr Kazantzidis said he encouraged local artists to drop by and show him their work for future shows. 1 George St, NORTH STRATHFIELD 9746 8746 www.ilcuore.com.au Set menus Drink packages Fully Licenced Ample parking MONDAY TO FRIDAY LUNCH FROM 12PM MONDAY TO SATURDAY DINNER FROM 6PM SUNDAY FUNCTIONS WELCOME Traditional Italian Cuisine with a BOOK YOUR CHRISTMAS FUNCTION NOW! 2291622K IWW
