HOMELIVING » ADVERTISING FEATURE ASK THE EXPERTS Leanne and Geoff Grainger are thinking of home improvement projects to do themselves over the Christmas holidays, but they don't have a big budget or many tools and are not big on experience either. Kennards Hire NSW general manager Adrian Manning said that in the past 60 years the fully Australian, family-owned company had helped countless thousands of couples in the same situation. ''You don't need a fat wallet or a tradesman's certificate to hire many of our tools and equipment items,'' he said. What would help with painting and wallpapering? We have paint sprayers, strippers, sanders and steamers. For small fences, lattice and decorative ironwork, a high-volume low-pressure sprayer can be hired. Airless sprayers are best for larger jobs. How can we remove flaking paint? Two types of paint burners are available. The gas burner has a naked flame, but the electric model is better for the inexperienced as it blows out hot air, which has paint curling off woodwork in no time. We also have five types of paint sanders. What about reaching high places safely? Adjustable aluminium trestles, which range in size from 1.8m to 4.8m high, are simple to use. We also have a nifty aluminium scaffold unit called Kwikscaf, which has just two pieces and can be carried by one person. Another small scaffold unit is designed for stairwells. Extension ladders are available in four sizes up to 12.6m, and stepladders in six sizes from 1.8m to 4.8m. What other projects could we consider? Paving a small barbecue area or path is not a terribly difficult job if you have an instruction sheet and the right equipment. To prepare the ground we have plate compactors in various sizes, including a very small model that fits in a car boot. We also hire block splitters and diamond-blade brick saws. What about a lawn and garden makeover? A rotary tiller can be used to freshen up existing garden beds or prepare small areas of soil for new gardens or lawn. For heavier work, including digging up old grass or breaking up compacted soil before new turf is laid, you need a rotary hoe. A turf cutter can also be used to remove old grass. What other lawn and garden machines can be hired? Our range includes lawn aerators and dethatchers, slasher mowers, chipper-mulchers, hedge trimmers, stump grinders, scrub cutters, weed eaters, leaf vacuum-blowers, posthole diggers and mini-loaders. Can we get advice? Our staff are glad to assist.
