MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, December 11, 2008 3 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au 'Blond' bank thief wore wig and dress FIONA BRADY A MAN wearing a blond wig and dressed as a woman robbed the Commonwealth Bank in North Strathfield (pictured) on Tuesday morning. The robbery happened at 8.30am as the staff in the bank on Concord Rd prepared to open for business. The thief who was armed with a handgun entered the bank and tied up staff before making off with a sum of money. The bank was closed for the day as police established a crime scene. The robbery is being investigated by the Robbery and Serious Crimes Squad. Det-Insp Hans Rupp from the squad told reporters there ''was one lone offender, dressed as a woman, who was clearly a man''. ''A number of staff were assaulted during the commission of the offence and tied up,'' he said. ''After the offender escaped, we don't know which way he went." A spokesman for the Commonwealth Bank said they were working with the authorities to try to catch the culprit. ''The Commonwealth Bank's main pri- ority is the safety of its staff and customers and in this instance, thankfully there have been no injuries. However, fully trained counsellors have been made available for staff,'' he said. The toys will be donated to the foundation's free Christmas Day lunch for the poor and needy. ''More than 3000 people will be at the lunch, and the gift you donate could be the only thing a child might get this Christmas,'' the Rev Bill Crews, from the Exodus Foundation, said. Shoppers can buy toys at Target and place them under the in-store Christmas tree. Mortgage broker Aussie Home Loans has donated food to the Christmas Day lunch. One person who has already made a very considerable donation to the Exodus Foundation's Christmas appeal is Mr Crews' advertising guru mate John Singleton, who handed over $1 million last week. On Thursday, Mr Singleton visited the foundation's Loaves and Fishes restaurant to meet some of the people his money will help.
