Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : December 10th 2008
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, December 11, 2008 25 Kooka Kids Club WANT to bang your own drum? Young music lovers have a chance to learn about classical music on December 14 as the popular Sydney Youth Orchestra's Toddlers Proms will be coming to Leichhardt with a special Christmas program. Toddlers Proms: the Magic Bell will introduce children and adults to all the unique sounds of each instrument in the orchestra and how the different sections work together to create music. The program will also feature the Nutcracker Suite and Christmas carols. It is a hands- on experience and everyone is encouraged to dance, clap and sing along. SYO CEO Susanne James said that it is an excellent introduction to classical music. "It is a chance to learn that music is incredibly exciting and entertaining. People think classical music is distant and alienated from people's lives. But it is in our lives every day and it is important to make that connection again,'' she said. The SYO Philharmonic is made up of 50 members between 14 and 20 years old, led by conductor George Ellis. Ms James said that the audience will have a chance to talk to the musicians after the show and take a closer look at the instruments. "Our musicians are really good role modes. Unlike other concerts, this is young people playing for young people. It often helps children develop an interest in learning an instrument themselves,'' she said. The Toddlers Proms: the Magic Bell will be at Leichhardt Town Hall December 14 at 9.30am, 11am and 1pm. Phone City Recital Hall, Angel Place, on 8256 2222 to book.
