INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, December 11, 2008 33 DINING Alive www.innerwestweekly.com.au Tasty treats to get anyone talking Delicious cafe fare is on offer at Cafe Birkenhead. Pictures: PHIL BLATCH NAME: Cafe Birkenhead WHERE: Shop 46, Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre, Drummoyne. Phone 9181 4339. OPEN: Weekdays from 7.30am to 5.30pm. Open from 8am on weekends. PROFILE: Fiona Brady CAFE Birkenhead is an old favourite for some of us here at the Inner-West Weekly. It's located in the Birkenhead Point Shopping Centre, which is currently undergoing major re- development works. But although there's lots of scaffolding around, many of the shops-- including Cafe Birkenhead -- are still open for business and bustling with Christmas shoppers. When we visited at Friday lunchtime, there were several jolly-looking Christmas lunches in full swing. We tucked into some excellent garlic bread and sipped on large, fresh juices, with curious names like WAG (watermelon and ginger) and PIM (pineapple and mint). Juices cost $4 for small servings and $5.50 for large. The menu includes a selection of filling main meals for the very hungry as well as plenty of reasonably priced lighter options such as salads, melts and sandwiches. For main course, two of us opted for the grilled Moroccan lamb salad ($19.95), one of the restaurant's most popular dishes. The tender lamb was tossed with roast pumpkin, couscous, beetroot and baby spinach with a homemade mint and coriander dressing. It was very fresh and tasty. The vegan among us was happy with her choice of a vegetarian melt -- red capsicum, mushroom and sun-dried tomato on foccacia bread ($12.95). And the hungriest among us opted for the tiger prawns -- a hotpot of succulent, peeled prawns ($21.95). We had our lunch with beautiful water views. Cafe Birkenhead is both fully licensed and BYO and caters for functions and weddings.
