He has more than 24 years of operational, leadership and management experience within the NSW Fire Brigade and said he said he was excited about the challenges ahead. ''I am looking forward to working with firefighters to encourage community engagement and relationship development to help mitigate the risk and impact of fire and emergencies on the community and the environment.'' Christmas markets BURWOOD'S Carols in the Park will be held in Burwood Park tonight (Thursday), featuring children's entertainment including The Sponge Bob Squarepants Show and fireworks. The inaugural Christmas Markets in Burwood Park will be held on December 20 and 21 from 11am until 9pm. Carols for communities HALLIDAY Park in Five Dock will host Christmas carols on Monday, December 22, from 7.30pm. Take a chair or a rug to sit on, and enjoy the entertainment. The event supports Communities for Communities, which helps build homes and hospitals for those most in need, such as Rainbow Village in Vietnam. Award for apnoea cure DRUMMOYNE resident Enrico Brambilla and a team of manufacturing and design engineers from ResMed Limited received the awards for Best Business Plan and Best Operations Plan in the NSW Enterprise Workshops 2008 Autumn Program. The ResMed team investigated and wrote a business plan for the commercialisation of a new stand-alone heated tube product to target the mild sleep apnoea market. Water world beckons SYDNEY Olympic Park Aquatic Centre will be welcome a new fun Splasher's Water Playground for the kids on Saturday. The playground is the first of its kind to be built indoors in the toddler pool. It features water slides, dumping buckets, interactive water cannons and larger than life aquatic animals. You can also enjoy the water slide, the rapid river ride and the blow up maze, which always guarantees a laugh. There's a huge outdoor area for those who want to soak up the sun as well as a cafe for the peckish. Top marks for teacher THE relieving manager of the education program at TAFE's Open Training and Education Network in Strathfield has taken out a 2008 Quality Teaching Award. Marina Kendal said she was humbled by the award. ''This award is an acknowledgment of what I've been able to achieve with my colleagues,'' she said. ''Quality teaching is all about communication skills and empathy. It's important to recognise that everyone learns differently I find adapting teaching skills to meet different needs challenging and rewarding.'' She received the award at a function at Government House and a prize of $500 provided by The Daily Telegraph and one year's free membership of the Australian College of Educators. Mosely St upgraded THE safety and beautification project in Mosely St, Strathfield, has been completed in time for Christmas. Local restaurants and cafes can now offer outdoor dining for customers. Burwood Mayor Lesley Furneaux-Cook said: ''The works that have been carried out both enhance the look of the area as well as improving safety." The improvements include extended paved areas, the planting of trees and the installation of lights and flagpoles. This year Council won a number of awards including an environment excellence award for the Cooks River Restoration Project at Freshwater Park presented by the Local Government and Shires Association (LGSA). On top of this Council was awarded a Biodiversity Conservation Award Council at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards in August.
