Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : December 17th 2008
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, December 18, 2008 17 NEWS Fashion-conscious seniors in despair SHIREEN KHALIL The Mannalls store at Burwood is ready to close. THE popular Burwood fashion store Mannalls is saying goodbye to its many customers after 85 years of business. Mannalls, which was taken over by fashion chain Noni-B in 1983, has been one of the most successful mature-aged female stores on Burwood Rd but will stop trading as its lease has come to an end. Buying manager of 24 years, Kathleen Ross is sad the store is closing down. ''I am absolutely devas- tated. I love the environ- ment and I enjoyed coming to work every day,'' Mrs Ross said. ''The best thing about the store was working for a wonderful company and having terrific staff. ''I love the people, they were beautiful people and I have a terrific team which have all been here with me for a long time.'' The Mannall family who opened the store in 1922 will sell the building. Mrs Ross said the store had received an overwhelm- ing amount of phone calls after they sent personal let- ters to their loyal cus- tomers. ''We sent personal letters about six weeks ago to cus- tomers telling them we are closing and thanking them for their support and many called and said 'where are we going to go now, we are not going to get this service anywhere else', which makes us feel great,'' Mrs Ross said. The store, which sold the latest fashion clothes for mature women, also had occasional fashion parades. ''I organised customers to be brought here by bus for shopping days, some from as far as the mountains and the south coast, where they enjoyed morning tea and fashion parades with the latest garments modelled by the staff,'' Mrs Ross said. The eight staff at Mannalls have been trans- ferred to other Noni-B stores, however, Mrs Ross said she will be having a good rest. ''I'm going to Queensland on a holiday and then I'll decide what I'm going to do when I get back.''
