A MAN in Auburn was charged in con- nection with possession of a large quantity of commercial grade fireworks on New Year's Eve. Just after 9.20pm police were patrolling Leura St when they saw a large firework explode in the middle of the road. It will be alleged that police then watched a man walk away from the explosion and enter a nearby house. After following the man, police noticed a large tarpaulin under which they allegedly discovered a large quantity of commercial grade fireworks. The 27-year-old man was arrested and taken to Auburn police station where he was charged with possession of explosives without a licence and negligent handling of explosives. He was granted bail at Parramatta Bail Court on New Year's Day. NEWS Body found in unit a suspicious case CRIME STOPPERS 1800 333 000 on the beat 1 3 2 1 POLICE are investigating the suspicious death of a young woman found in a Strathfield unit just before Christmas. Officers responding to a call to a unit on Beresford Rd on December 21 discovered the body of a 22-year-old South Korean national after midnight. A police guard was placed on the unit which was secured for forensic analysis. Officers also canvassed the apartment block in the search for witnesses and are hoping a post-mortem examination will determine the cause of death. Anyone with information about the inci- dent or the woman's last known movements should phone Auburn police on 9646 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. 2 A CAR driven by a P-plater crashed into a telegraph pole in Strathfield on Sunday, critically injuring a male passen- ger. Witnesses told police the accident hap- pened at 6.30am after the blue Honda sedan overtook a pink Hyundai sedan travelling west along Cooper St. A short time later both vehicles failed to negotiate a sharp bend and the Honda crashed into a timber telegraph pole. The man in the back passenger seat was critically injured and was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The 18-year-old male driver from Enfield and the male front-seat passenger were taken to hospital but their injuries are unknown. The 18-year-old P-plate driver of the Hyundai which had mounted the kerb before stopping was also taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for assessment. Police are investigating the accident and are urging witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. 3 A GUITAR and keyboard were used as weapons during a Boxing Day brawl at Lidcombe railway station, police say. The assault happened at the intersection of Church and John streets at 11.20pm. Three men were allegedly set upon by a group of 15 men who assaulted them using the instruments before leaving the area. A second altercation broke out a short time later when the two groups crossed paths on the railway station concourse. During this incident, one of the men was allegedly glassed and sustained cuts to his ear, face and chest. His two companions suffered cuts and bruises. Police arrested 10 men, aged between 18 and 25 and charged them with affray.
