Westmead Children's Hospital has already had many children admitted to its Intensive Care Unit after recent near drownings. Trauma Surgery head Danny Crass said many drownings in recent years could have been prevented. ''Supervision is para- mount in preventing these deaths in this vulnerable group,'' Professor Cass said. ''Most drownings are still children wandering away and drowning without any- one around. ''Many also take place at the child's own home or a friend's or family member's house or gathering at the poolside where there is no supervision of the children -- one adult should always be dedicated solely to supervis- ing children.'' Protect your child this summer. Don't leave them unsupervised around water. SUPERVISION IS THE KEY 1. Young children should never be left unsupervised around water. The supervision should be 100 per cent concentration. Do not rely on older children and siblings. 2. The pool fence should completely isolate the pool, be 1.2m high with a self-closing, self-latching, child-resistant gate. Vertical slats should be no more than 100mm apart and the horizontal sections at least 900mm apart. 3. Maintain pool gates to ensure they close properly and never prop them open. Don't place anything near the fence a child might use to climb over. 4. Learn cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and display a CPR sign in the pool area. 5. Teach children to swim, but don't assume they no longer need adult supervision. 11 The Boulevarde, Strathfield Ph:9763 1855 www.strathfieldplaza.com.au January School Holidays Art and Craft Workshops A fun and exciting way to encourage the kids to express themselves artistically!
