The CSIRO had projected sea levels would reach their highest for 18 years on Monday morning, but high-pressure weather meant its effects were benign. But Mr Pope, who has lived in Russell Lea for a decade, was still impressed by how high the water level rose. ''Certainly it was the highest I've ever seen it,'' he said. King tides, which occur nat- urally twice a year, give advance warning of what climate change could do to the NSW coast. The CSIRO has estimated aver- age sea levels could be 50cm higher by 2070. ''The king tide is not caused by climate change but it can help us picture what our coastlines might look like in the future,'' the CSIRO's Kathy McInnes said. The State Environment Depart- ment co-ordinated the first state- wide photographic survey on Monday, with the help of local councils, groups and individuals. It asked people to take photos of areas vulnerable to rising sea levels, especially jetties, seawalls, roads and foreshores. A department spokeswoman said a report should be ready by July. As for Mr Pope and three-year- old Izack D'Andrea -- they were happy with the results of their fishing expedition. ''Izack caught a fish, that was the main thing,'' Mr Pope said.
