MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, January 15, 2009 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Fear as train derailed FIONA BRADY The front car of a Tangara train derailed just outside Homebush Station last Wednesday. Picture: JUSTIN LLOYD A PASSENGER on the train that derailed at Homebush last Wednesday has described her or- deal and criticised the response of CityRail staff. Cheryl Macklin was travelling in the first carriage of the westbound CityRail train when it left the tracks about 4.40pm. Mrs Macklin, 52, who was trav- elling with her 75-year-old mother, said the first sign something was wrong was when the train failed to make its scheduled stop at Homebush Station. ''There was lots of shaking and jolting,'' she said. ''Next thing it started tipping over. ''I thought, ''oh my gosh, what's happening'. '''Mum and I both thought, 'will this topple over onto its side?'.'' Despite their fears, both car- riages managed to stay upright but passengers had to pry open the doors to escape. Police and emergency services attended the scene and one passen- ger received treatment for an injured wrist. But Mrs Macklin was critical of rail staff who, she said, were slow to come to passengers' aid and did not keep them informed about what was happening. A report in the Daily Telegraph on Tuesday suggested the train might have been derailed by an emergency system which throws a train from the line when it breaches a red signal. A RailCorp spokesman refused to comment on possible reasons for the derailment while an inves- tigation was under way. ''The driver was breath-tested and produced a negative result (ie zero),'' he said. ''In line with standard pro- cedures, the driver has been taken off driving duties while the inves- tigation continues. ''The train was taken to a CityRail maintenance depot on Wednesday night. ''It is not appropriate for RailCorp to comment further on possible causes of the incident while it is under investigation by the NSW Office of Transport Safety Investigation.'' Mrs Macklin said she was not planning any rail journeys in the foreseeable future. ''I think it will be a while before I get back on a train,'' she said. Govt dips in for pool upgrade ENFIELD Pool will receive a long- awaited make-over before next summer. A Federal Government grant of $190,000 which will be spent on new indoor change rooms at Enfield Pool comes as a result of last month's inaugural meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government at Parliament House. The project will also provide a new access from the car park at the back of the pool and a new counter. Burwood Mayor Lesley Furneaux-Cook said the pool's change rooms were in need of a major upgrade. ''Enfield Pool is an extremely popular amenity and its outdoor changing area is out of date and not ideal,'' Cr Furneaux-Cook said. ''With this valuable grant we intend to develop indoor chang- ing rooms that will greatly en- hance our historic pool. ''Once the works at the pool have been approved and we re- ceive the cash injection, it will provide a great boost to our ongoing infrastructure projects with priorities remaining the up- grade of community facilities.'' Enfield Pool, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, making it Sydney's oldest fresh- water Olympic pool, saw about 4000 local children participate in the Learn to Swim program last year. www.napf.com.au DOV ER ST.
