Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : January 14th 2009
18 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, January 15, 2009 MB NEWS Lick nits before they can spread INNER-WEST parents are being urged to guard against head lice as a new school year approaches. The Sydney West Area Health Service's communicable diseases and immunisation manager, Dr Vicky Sheppeard says it only takes one infested head to infect a whole class. ''Anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is,'' she said ''However, head lice are not dangerous, do not carry diseases, and, importantly, are not a sign of poor hygiene. ''To minimise infestations, parents need to check their child's hair regularly, tie long hair back if possible and avoid sharing combs or brushes.''' Dr Sheppeard has issued some useful advice to parents on how to check for lice. ''To check hair for head lice, carefully comb plenty of hair conditioner through the dry hair, then comb again in sections with a metal fine-tooth 'nit' comb,'' she said. ''The hair conditioner slows the head lice down so they can be trapped in the comb. ''Wipe the combings on a white paper towel and examine them with a magnifying glass in strong light to look for head lice and eggs. ''If you do find head lice or eggs, there are two effective treatments available -- a hair conditioner treatment or an insecticide treatment.'' Mr Tripodi said the signing of a formal agreement between NSW Maritime and the Water and Energy Department would pro- vide for new signs and other safety regu- lations under the Crossings of NSW Navi- gable Waters: Electricity Industry Code. The code was drafted by NSW Maritime in collaboration with the Water and Energy Department and electricity network oper- ators, primarily to minimise the risk of boaters being electrocuted by overhead powerlines. The code also stresses safe anchoring away from submarine cables. It also makes it simpler for the public using waterways to work out the minimum safe heights for vessels passing under overhead powerlines. Tides, release of water from upstream dams and flooding are all taken into account in the new system. Visit www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/rec--- boating/crossings for details.
