48 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, January 15, 2009 MB Inner-West Weekly Sport Susannah is on a roll SHIREEN KHALIL 'I thought it was funny actually that I beat some experienced players' ' SUSANNAH MIECHELS Champion bowler Susannah Miechels practises at Ashfield Bowling Club. Picture: DANNY AARONS LAWN BOWLS LAWN bowls isn't high on the sporting list of many teenagers, except Susannah Miechels whose passion for the game has helped her to beat players twice her age. The 18-year-old high school graduate always had an interest in lawn bowls. ''I've always liked the sport and got into because of my parents and so I kept playing as it was easy to beat older people,'' Sussanah said. Despite only playing competi- tively for two months, she beat 28 people in a knockout open mixed consistency tournament at Ashfield Bowling Club late last year. ''I thought it was funny actually that I beat some experienced players,'' she said. ''It was really good and my coach is really good and gives me great motivation.'' Sussanah was the youngest com- petitor in the six-week tourna- ment which included some players twice her age. One com- petitor has 15 years of experience. Ashfield Bowling Club manager Michael Wilson said Sussanah was a great, committed player. ''She played a number of rounds (six) and she beat along the way some experienced players and male players who have had a lot of experience playing in inter- national club competitions,'' Mr Wilson said. ''She is very committed to the sport of lawn bowls and receives coaching from Russell Butler.'' Mr Wilson is confident Sussanah will get better. ''She has a very bright future in front of her and the more she plays, the better she will get,'' he said. The Concord resident who has been with Ashfield Bowling club for a few months said she hoped to make the state team. ''I have been playing altogether for about two years and I would like to make it to state one day.'' 195 Parramatta Road, HOMEBUSH WEST p: 9746 6400 www.thewentworth.com.au MON - $2 Happy Hour 5-6pm - POKER Chance to win tickets to Star City.
