Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : January 21st 2009
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, January 22, 2009 5 Double the party for Lunar New Year FIONA BRADY Shen Jun and Hong Mei Yim rehearse at Ashfield's Pratten park. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~pP235606 ASHFIELD town centre will be a riot of colour this Saturday as the celebrations for Lunar New Year begin. The fun starts at 10am with a traditional lion dance along Liverpool Rd, Hercules St and Ashfield Mall. The mall is also the venue for other cultural entertainment from 11am to 2pm, including traditional dancing, martial arts demonstrations, fashion parades and a performance by singers from the Shanghai Opera group of the Australian Federation of Chinese Organisations. ''I'm very happy to bring Shanghai Opera to Sydney so people can appreciate it,'' singer Shen Jun said. Mayor Ted Cassidy is hoping for a big turnout on Saturday. ''We are pleased to present this event for all cultures that celebrate the Lunar New Year,'' he said. ''It incorporates not only the welcoming of the Year of the Ox for the Chinese community but also the traditional celebrations of the Korean, Vietnamese and other communities who celebrate the Lunar New Year.'' Ashfield Council, Ashfield Mall, the Sydney Inner-West Chinese Commercial Association and the Australian Federation of Chinese Organisations are staging the event. NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Tag-shy cars may clog up Victoria Rd FIONA BRADY Is there more traffic than last year? Tell us online www.innerwestweekly.com.au Little traffic on Iron Cove Bridge before 9am last Friday. THERE is no evidence more motorists are using Victoria Rd since the Harbour Bridge went cashless, the RTA has claimed. Media reports published last week suggested drivers were di- verting to what's already the state's slowest road because they were unwilling to buy e-tags. But a RTA spokesman said there is ''no indication'' this is the case, despite its own figures showing an extra 2149 cars used the Gladesville Bridge the day after the bridge went cashless com- pared with the same day a year earlier. ''Traffic volumes on the Gladesville Bridge are similar to the same period last year in both the week before and the week after the introduction of cashless toll- ing on the Sydney Harbour Bridge,'' the spokesman said. ''Traffic volumes on individual days during the summer holiday period are not an accurate indi- cator because holiday patterns vary from year to year.'' But the State Opposition said the real test would come next Tuesday when a peak-hour con- gestion tax on the Harbour Bridge and tunnel came into force. Opposition roads spokesman Andrew Stoner has accused local MPs Verity Firth and Angela D'Amore of staying quiet on the issue. Ms D'Amore is on maternity leave. A spokesman for Ms Firth's office said the MP was tracking the situation and she had been in contact with the Roads Minister Michael Daley's office about the situation.
