Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : January 28th 2009
4 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, January 29, 2009 MB NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Ari has bag packed for big school FIONA BRADY Ari Kordy is ready to start school at Croydon Public. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP237905 LITTLE Ari Kordy has been counting the sleeps until he starts ''big school'' today. The five-year-old from Croydon Park is particularly fond of his smart new uniform -- especially his schoolbag, according to mum Hazar. But Mrs Kordy admitted that Ari was also ''a little bit anxious'' about his first day at Croydon Public School. ''He can be shy at the beginning, but then he settles in,'' the mother-of-four said. ''It helps that he's been at pre- school for the last three years. ''But if he cries, I'll cry. ''If he's all right, I'll be all right.'' As for Mrs Kordy, she's already dreading the school run. With her teenage daughter Sarah at Burwood Girls' High School, son Ramon, 11, starting Homebush Boys and Ari at Croydon Public School, she expects mornings at the Kordy house to be ''very hectic''. ''I'll be driving to three different schools in the mornings,'' she said. ''I'm not looking forward to the travelling,'' she said. But there is a bonus to having everyone -- except three-year-old Aaron -- back at school. ''It will be much quieter,'' she said. ''I'm looking forward to some peace and quiet.'' Summertime and snakes are snappy KIM SHAW MID-SUMMER is snake bite season and Sydney vets are treat- ing more pets than usual for brown and black snake bites. And the Inner West is not immune. The snakes are biting in suburban areas, not just in neigh- bourhoods near bushland. Strathfield Animal Referral Hospital saw five cases this month, from suburban areas, and vets from the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in North Ryde said pets were being bitten in the Inner West. Dozens of cats and dogs were being treated each week across Sydney but not all vets in Sydney carried antivenom. Larger emergency vets com- monly stock antivenom for tiger, brown and black snakes, but due to the cost and limited shelf-life of the serum, smaller urban vets sometimes cannot offer treatment. Veterinary surgeon Lachlan Mairs said pets from all over Sydney were being bitten, mainly by brown and red-bellied black snakes. ''A lot of animals die without people knowing why,'' he said. ''They get weird neurological symptoms -- they can't breathe, can't get up, their pupils dilate, there might be pain at the site of the bite, they might collapse. ''We saw three last week, surprisingly from all over Sydney. ''Dogs are pretty stupid and go back for more, but cats tend to run away. They are not quite as stupid as dogs.'' Mr Mairs and other vets said some smaller clinics would not carry antivenom because there was less demand for it, it was expensive and had limited shelf life. University of Sydney, Camden, veterinary clinic administrator Joanne Moon said the word from vets around Sydney was that this year was particularly bad for snake bites. Manufacturers of the antivenom said if the snake venom had already caused damage, the antivenom would work less effectively.
