Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : January 28th 2009
40 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, January 29, 2009 MB Inner-West Weekly Sport Footy in her blood BRAD EARL To be given this opportunity so early is unbelievable' ' DANIELLE BROGAN Soccer player Danielle Brogan has been selected for the Matildas. Picture: DANNY AARONS ~PP237562 CREATED to provide greater opportunities for Australia's women's footballers, the W-League has certainly done that for Danielle Brogan. After playing for Sydney FC in the just-completed season, the 20-year-old from Enfield has made her first Matildas squad. Australia will start a two-match series against Italy at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday (4pm). Brogan's call-up came as a sur- prise considering the W-League ran for only three months. ''I'd really only been back in it for then and to be given this opportunity so early is unbeliev- able,'' she said. ''I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I get a run on the park.'' The defender represented the Young Matildas at two under-20 women's world cups, in Thailand in 2004 and Russia in '06. ''We'd just got back from Russia and I did my HSC (at Bethlehem College, Ashfield) and after that I decided to have a bit of a break,'' Brogan said. That break was from the NSW Institute of Sport program, the level from which players are con- sidered for national selection. Brogan instead has played with Macarthur Rams in the Women's Premier League for the past two years. Now that she is back in the institute's fold she will spend the winter season playing against boys' youth league teams. Brogan's parents, Sean and Maureen, are Irish. With her father ''a big football fan'', she said her brother Jared started playing when he was six. ''I was about 41/2 and apparently Isaidtomymum, 'Iwanttodothe same thing', so she signed me up for Belmore Eagles,'' Brogan said. ''I made the Canterbury under- 11 rep team with the boys, and played with them for two years. Then I was picked in the NSW under-14 girls' state team.'' Get a great price in the Inner West.
