GST Statue hit again FIONA BRADY Super brolly a statistic, vandals are atrocious The Mary Poppins statue in Ashfield Park has been vandalised again. Inset from top: Gracie Drew with the newly-unveiled statue in March, 2004; Gracie at the scene after it had been cut down in August, 2005; and the statue when it was spray painted in May, 2008. Main picture: PHIL BLATCH IS there something they don't like about Mary? That's what people in Ashfield are asking about the Mary Poppins statue in Ashfield Park which has just been vandalised again. In the latest attack on January 22, Mary's umbrella and carpetbag were broken off. Luckily the umbrella and the bag were later recovered and will be repaired, Ashfield Council said. The council also had to clear up the damage in May last year when teenagers on a graffiti rampage sprayed the statue, worth more than $22,000. But the most serious attack occurred in August, 2005, when the statue was found lying on the ground after being cut off at the feet from the pedestal. Ashfield Mayor Ted Cassidy said the council would repair the latest damage in the most cost- effective way possible and ensure the umbrella and bag were se- curely attached to discourage fu- ture attacks. ''This form of vandalism is very destructive and disappointing for both council and residents who enjoy the park,'' he said. One person who was especially saddened by the attack was the Summer Hill teenager who was responsible for having the statue built. Gracie Drew was 11 when she started her two-year campaign to have the statue made after she learned that the author of Mary Poppins, P.L. (Pamela) Travers, had once lived in Pembroke St, Ashfield. Gracie, now 18, has just left home to enrol in the Defence Force Academy, but her mother Kathy Bergin said she had seen the damage before she left. ''We were sad to see Mary Poppins destroyed,'' she said. ''We thought, 'not again','' she said. ''Most people love it, there are just a few people out there who ruin it for everyone else.''
