10 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 5, 2009 MB NEWS Fish linked at last SHANNON ANDREUCCI The Fishway opens at Bicentennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP240354 THE fish at Sydney Olympic Park are fortunate. Auburn State Labor MP Barbara Perry has just opened a new fishway to mark World Wetlands Day. The Boundary Creek Fishway re-establishes the natural link between Parra- matta River and the upper reaches of Boundary Creek which was once blocked to fish by concrete. ''The natural connection between the estuarine and freshwater ecosystems is once again complete and this will be of great benefit to native fish and the biodiversity of the area,'' Ms Perry said. She said the new fishway would ensure native fish including mullet, gudgeon and eels can feed, breed and nurture their offspring in a rehabilitated, suitable and secure area. ''The fishway is made up of carefully designed pools, separated by strategically- positioned rocks that allow creek water to form a gentle gradient, which can be used by fish in their passage upstream,'' she said. ''The fishway is a great local example of how the NSW Government is working with the Federal Govern- ment to improve the health of the Parramatta River basin for the benefit of the people along its shores.''
