MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 5, 2009 41 SPORT Anglers earn their stripes JACK SCRINE Assistant editor Modern Fishing A striped marlin. Picture: www.almcglashan.com THE Port Stephens blue water anglers haven't quite known what to do with themselves over the past week, with the waters further north not yet pro- ducing actively feeding fish. I'm happy to report, how- ever, an influx of striped marlin captures off Terrigal, north of Sydney. Some boats have been re- porting as many as five raised fish in a session. The short distance from Sydney, in comparison to the usual marlin hot spots at this time of year, makes the Terrigal stripes an even more attractive proposition. Fresh slimy mackerel, stitched as skipbaits or slow-trolled live around the bait balls, are your best bet. There has also been the odd report of solid striped marlin taken off Sydney this week. Head wide to find blue water, use your sounder and GPS to position yourself near bait schools, use big live baits and you're in with a very good chance. I fished Long Reef this week with Modern Fishing Magazine's Al McGlashan, where slow-trolled live baits were greeted by rampaging hordes of undersized king- fish. A solitary legal-sized fish was our reward, but the bite was hot and the fishing still fun. Put the hours in and spend the time getting qual- ity bait and the 65cm-plus prize will present itself. Lake Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches has been firing, with consistent blackfish, flathead, bream and trevally among the op- tions from the shore or kayak. Sydney Harbour has been turning on some hot fishing, with amberjack, jewfish and kings all being reported in- shore this week. Live baits and large, soft plastic shads in underwater holes, or flicking lures around struc- ture, are your best bet. Flathead bream and tailor have been active near Iron Cove, with some anglers finding success on bait and others on lures. In the coming week, the north-easter will be picking up in the afternoon every day, so head out early to beat the breeze. The seas around Sydney will be mer- cifully calm, though, reach- ing 1.4m at most -- the blue water beckons.
