Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : February 18th 2009
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 19, 2009 5 Donate a few tools to help men rebuild Strathfield Men's Shed co- ordinator Terry McCowan. SHIREEN KHALIL A HAMMER, a nail and a shovel are just a few of the things needed to help the Victorian fire victims rebuild their lives. Men's Shed Australia managing director Peter Sergeant is calling for donations of tools for Men's Sheds in Victoria that have been destroyed by the fires. ''These blokes have lost all their equipment and any tools are wel- come from fencing material, build- ing material, fridges, hammers, nails -- anything that might be in a men's shed,'' Mr Sergeant said. Due to it's size Strathfield Men's Shed will be the drop-off point. ''Over the next few weeks we will be spending a lot of time working out the logistics and we will have to take out the emotion and look at all the things that need to be done,'' Mr Sergeant said. Once they have received enough donations they will put together tool kits to send to Victoria. ''Our main concern with this operation was that the tools could get totally lost due to the amount of things going into Victoria, but by collecting it here we can get people to do the sorting and organ- ising,'' he said. Mr Sergeant said if they col- lected enough tools they would start a permanent repository of tools for sheds in the community that don't have a lot of money. Strathfield Men's Shed will hold a meeting at 10am on Saturday at 28 Pomerory St, Homebush, for those willing to join the effort. Local schools did their bit by hosting fundraisers like the one in St Vincent's Primary School in Ashfield where students and their families donated around $1500. The event was co-ordinated by the school's Mini Vinnies social justice group. To commemorate their ''help- ing hand'', students traced around their hands and their resulting artworks were displayed in the school playground. Meanwhile the Summer Hill Village Business Association hosted a brunch in the village square on Saturday. All the food was donated by local businesses. It raised $3355. Another foodie fundraiser is taking place at Rhodes Oporto (Shop 75 Rhodes shopping centre) this Thursday. All sales of burgers and other food will go towards the Red Cross appeal and a donation box will also be available. And at Five Dock, Boxing Cen- tral hosted a boxing class fundraiser last Thursday which raised $385. MASSIVE SAVINGS!!!
